305 Fitness is Empowering Self Love Through Fitness
The mission at 305 Fitness is to inspire people to love themselves harder and express themselves louder. Learn why dance-based workouts are such an empowering form of exercise at 305 Fitness.
Self-Love and Fitness at 305 Fitness
305 Fitness, a popular dance cardio workout, helps people find self-love through fitness. And this winter, 305 Fitness has returned to Philadelphia with two high-energy classes every Saturday morning at Urban Movement Arts (2100 Chestnut Street). All while manager, Anna Logan looks to secure a permanent spot in Philly to bring the electric vibe that 305 Fitness is best known for.
As Sadie Kurzban, founder of 305 Fitness, says: “Dance and movement have the power to heal and we believe transformation from the inside is more powerful than transformation of just the outside.”
Why 305 Fitness Has Been Such a Success All Over the Country
For those new to 305 Fitness, it’s a full body, dance cardio workout, usually accompanied by a live DJ who mixes tracks during the class. This workout revolutionized how people get their cardio in. 305 Fitness is cardio for the people who hate cardio because dancing is just fun! Dancing is a party, and at 305 Fitness, exercise can be a party, too. Exercise shouldn’t only be a way to burn calories. 305 Fitness encourages you to dance like no one is watching!
While dancers at heart flock to this form of exercise, 305 Fitness is also great for someone like me who is not a dancer. The moves are modern, simple and repetitive. And when put to great music, I actually feel like I look pretty decent shaking my ass. The choreography strikes a perfect balance to keep everyone in the room — with all the various levels and abilities — engaged, encouraged and having a blast. As Alyza Ngbokoli, a Philly-based instructor, shares “305 instructors encourage you to take up space,” creating a welcoming environment for everyone.
The physical space itself plays a huge role in the 305 Fitness workout. I’ve been to the 305 Fitness studio in New York City and can tell you that place is a total vibe! From the colored lights to the mirror disco balls and the fun graphics all over the walls, 305 Fitness in NYC takes your workout right into the club. The environment draws you in, regardless of your inhibitions. Anna is now looking to bring that same energy to Philadelphia and I am absolutely here for it!

Why You Should Dance
Sure, dancing is a fun way to exercise. And yup, it burns a ton of calories, while improving cardiovascular health. But there is a lot more to dancing. Dancing keeps your mind young. Dancing is known to offset neurodegenerative diseases like dementia. And dancing is believed to “positively affect biochemistry of brain tissue more than other type of exercise because dancing puts such high demands on our cognitive function.” (from The Story of 305 Fitness) In other words, the cognitive challenge of learning choreography helps keep your mind sharp! Remember that during the two choreography sections of the 305 Fitness class.
Dancing also boosts your mood. I cannot help but smile the entire time I do this workout. And I’m not alone. Exercise is commonly recommended by mental health professionals for combating depression and anxiety. It increases serotonin, dopamine and endorphin levels, contributing to better mental well-being. The mind-body connection of dance can lead to true healing, and 305 Fitness makes sure every class is filled with joy and positivity.
The 305 Way
When I started to research 305 Fitness for this post, I quickly learned that 305 is much more than just a 45 minute workout. Founder, Sadie Kurzban considered so much when she created this format a decade ago as part of a college project. 305 Fitness was actually at the forefront of inclusivity and body positivity before the terms gained mainstream popularity. In every 305 class, you’'ll experience themes of individuality, self expression and empowerment.
Here are just some of the founding principles of 305 that come through in class today:
Joy in movement for everyone
Creating an affirming and inclusive environment
Encouraging self-love, regardless of body type
Advocating for self-expression and individuality
At 305 Fitness, everyone is worthy of being seen and celebrated. It’s not about perfection — it’s about embracing who you are.
